Agrigento, Gas Leak Explosion: the Importance of Prevention

The explosion in Ravanusa, in the province of Agrigento – which unfortunately caused loss of life and the destruction of three buildings, dramatically brings us back to the topic of gas leak prevention. Too often we forget the value and importance that safety against gas leaks must have, especially in domestic settings.

The progress made in recent years, both in new building constructions and in the installations and technology used for methane gas distribution, has been important and fundamental in increasing reliability and safety against explosions. However, reality brings us back to the sad awareness that technical failures, tampering (voluntary or involuntary) with systems, and fortuitous circumstances like those mentioned in the news, can cause saturation and detonations with terrible and dramatic consequences.

Our commitment as a Company and industry professionals is to continue our constant and, we hope, effective work to raise awareness among users, authorities, and competent bodies about the increasing importance of preventive detection of gas leaks – at domestic, commercial, and industrial levels. Several foreign countries have already adopted mandatory automatic detection systems for years which, as in the field of fire prevention, have saved lives and property. We hope that in Italy too, not only at a regulatory level but also in terms of raising awareness among citizens and private users, the adoption of mandatory regulations in this matter will soon be considered, and that news like this will definitively disappear from the headlines of our newspapers.
